Explore 19th & 20th-century Classical Realism in this 3-Day Portrait Workshop. We bring you through the fundamentals on canvas preparation, pigment mixing, and portrait anatomy. Participants will gain a deeper understanding on facial proportions and structure. The workshop progresses into colour mixing and realistic skin tones, focusing on controlled paint application for depth and dimension. On the final session, participants will learn how to refine skin tones, and focus on key facial features such as the eyes, nose, and mouth. By the end, students complete a life-like portrait with a polished, professional finish.
Session 1: Foundations of Portraiture
Students begin with canvas preparation, learning how to properly prime and prepare their surface for painting. They are then introduced to pigment mixing, exploring how to control tone and build a balanced palette, with a focus on developing natural skin tones.
The session continues with portrait anatomy, where students study facial proportions, structure, and key anatomical landmarks. Through guided demonstrations, they learn how form and proportion work together to create accurate and expressive portraits.
Session 2: Colour Mixing & Application of Skin Tones
In this session, students will delve into the foundational techniques of classical realism, focusing on how light and shadow sculpt the face. Tatiana will demonstrate the use of chiaroscuro to create depth and realism, while also teaching the art of mixing and applying skin tones accurately. Through practical exercises, students will learn to build and capture the essence and volume of the portrait..
Session 3: Detailed Painting and Facial Features
In the final session, students will focus on bringing their paintings to completion. They will learn how to tell when a painting is completed with visual aids. Students will learn in-depth on the features of a portrait such as the eyes, noses and mouth. By the end of this session, students will have a completed painting, ready to showcase.
Class size: 10 Pax per group
Duration: 3 hour each session (over 3 weeks)

Overseas Visiting Instructor Background
Born in 2001, Tatiana Popova is an avid artist and a passionate art educator whose practice is grounded in classical academic traditions. She began drawing at the age of four and received her foundational training at the Academy of Watercolour and Fine Arts of Sergey Andriaka in Moscow, where she studied under the principles of Russian Academic Art.
In 2020, she enrolled herself at the Florence Academy of Art (FAA) in Italy, where she further refined her training in drawing and oil painting. Her work is centred on figurative realism, with a focus on light, anatomy, and the psychological presence of the subject, informed by both rigorous academic study and her Slavic cultural heritage.
Alongside her studio practice, Tatiana is an active instructor, teaching drawing and painting to students of varying levels. She has assisted and conducted workshops at the Florence Academy of Art and LACA Art Academy in Singapore, contributing to classical art education within structured academic settings.
Her works have received international recognition, including the Merit Prize at the 7th FIGURATIVE International Juried Art Competition (Los Angeles), Winner of the Art Epic Still Life Competition (Chicago), Finalist at the Portrait Society of America’s Future Generation Competition, and Honorable Mention at The Almenara Art Prize (Spain). She has exhibited in Italy, the United States, and Singapore, and continues to develop her practice through teaching, exhibitions, and residency work at the Florence Academy of Art.
