Course Overview:
Oil Painting Intermediate I is designed for artists who want to refine their techniques and deepen their understanding of classical landscape and still life painting. Through studying the works of John Constable, participants will explore colour, light, and brushwork while learning to apply techniques used by the Old Masters.
This course emphasizes both technical skill and personal expression. Participants will practice alla prima painting, glazing, tonal studies, and plein air painting. Students will complete three paintings during the course, including 1 imitation and 3 original landscapes, while gaining confidence in their ability to observe, interpret, and paint from life.
Who Should Join
Artists with some experience in oil painting who wish to advance their skills and learn professional techniques for still life and landscape painting.
Materials Provided
All paints, brushes, and canvases are supplied. Students are welcome to bring their own materials.
Course Highlights
Participants will develop advanced alla prima and glazing techniques. They will study and imitate the styles of John Constable. They will explore tonal studies to design original landscapes. They will experience plein air painting in a natural setting. By the end of the course, they will complete 4 finished paintings, including imitation and original works
Lessons 1–4: Alla Prima Still Life (Intermediate Level)
Take a step further into the warm & cool colours of still life painting and delve deeper into how to use alla prima technique to create a still life painting.
Lessons 5–7: Imitation I – Clouds & Greeneries (Inspired by John Constable)
Imitate how John Constable paints and understand his choice and application of colours.
Lessons 8–11: Design Your Own Landscape I – Tonal Studies
Experiment with tonal values to plan and design personal landscape compositions.
Lesson 12: En Plein Air I – Outdoor Painting @ Botanic Gardens
Explore your first plein air painting in an outdoor setting.
Commencement time and date will be discussed with you through email or private message before the first lesson.
Class size: Maximum of 5 pax.
Duration: 2-2.5 hours each lesson
Who can join?
This class is suitable for those with some foundation but would like further hone or refresh their skills.
The course is too long. Can we take breaks in between?
LACA Art Studio runs on a flexible schedule to cater to your busy lifestyle. While it is recommended to attend at least 1 lesson per week, we also understand if breaks are needed for unforeseeable circumstances. Kindly inform the instructor 12h in advance should you not be able to come for lesson. There is no limitation on number of breaks that can be taken but each course must be completed within 6 months from date of purchase. Any unattended lessons will be forfeited.
